Commentary: Concomitant atrial fibrillation ablation: The forgotten procedure

چکیده
Should we operate on elderly patients? And, if them, should provide them with complete treatment of their disease? The answers to these 2 questions seem obvious, and are convinced that vast majority the cardiac surgeons would respond affirmatively both. In reality, however, problem combined surgeries in is multifaceted; not only must consider operating an aging perhaps fragile population, but also have perform complex procedures achieve same results expected younger patients.

Permanent pacemaker requirement after concomitant surgical ablation for atrial fibrillation.
In their recent review of ablation options for atrial fibrillation, Pinho-Gomes et al. [1] omitted permanent pacemaker requirement as a complication of surgical ablation. In their series of 594 patients undergoing concomitant surgical ablation of atrial fibrillation, of whom 6.9% required permanent pacemakers postoperatively, Pecha et al. [2] identified biatrial lesion sets as a statistically s...
متن کاملConcomitant ablation of atrial fibrillation in octogenarians: an observational study
BACKGROUND Cardiac surgery is increasingly required in octogenarians. These patients frequently present atrial fibrillation (AF), a significant factor for stroke and premature death. During the last decade, AF ablation has become an effective procedure in cardiac surgery. Because the results of concomitant AF ablation in octogenarians undergoing cardiac surgery are still not clear, we evaluated...
متن کاملAblation of atrial fibrillation: a procedure come of age?
Various approaches for catheter ablation of focal initiators of atrial fibrillation or the substrate for maintaining atrial fibrillation have evolved over the past 5 years. Despite these advances, there are still a large number of unresolved issues regarding the efficacy and safety of these procedures as well as optimal patient selection for the different approaches. These uncertainties raise q...
متن کاملAblation of atrial fibrillation.
Fueled by dissatisfaction with pharmacologic strategies to treat atrial fibrillation (AF), the results of basic and clinical investigation into the understanding of AF initiation and maintenance mechanisms, and the explosive development in catheter-based technologies, AF ablation has matured from a purely investigational technique to a preferred, safe, and effective approach for curing AF, part...
متن کاملAblation of atrial fibrillation.
Recognition that the initiation of atrial fibrillation often is dependent on arrhythmogenic foci within the pulmonary veins1 opened a new chapter in our understanding of the mechanisms of atrial fibrillation, which in turn has led to dramatic improvements in our ability to ablate atrial fibrillation. Based on experimental studies and clinical studies that used a variety of catheter and surgical...
